Entry Room Update – Front Door Privacy Project

You may remember my entry room update from a little while ago.  I decided to add another finishing touch to our front door recently.  I noticed that we have been getting a ton of contractors knocking at our door for a while now, trying to pressure me into hiring them to work on our house.  I noticed that they do not seem to go knock on the surrounding neighbor’s doors, so I can only assume they peruse the recent sales in the neighborhood and target those homes.

One day in particular, I was taking a break from painting one of the rooms and decided to take a little pregnancy nap in the living room.  The pets started going wild and woke me up.  I looked up and saw a man’s face staring in the little window at the top of our front door.  I got a little creeped out by a man watching me nap, and decided that window needed to be covered up a.s.a.p.

Since it is an odd shaped window, I didn’t want to try to put a curtain to cover it.  Instead, I got some self-adhesive window film with a “lace” pattern to it.  The film would be really easy to use if using on a standard sized window, but it was a little trickier with the door window.

I started by using a piece of plain printer paper to trace an outline of one of the glass panels.  I had to make more than one template since they are actually not all the exact same shape.  Then I cut out the film, sprayed the glass with water, placed the film over the glass, and spread it on with a squeegee.  It took a little while to get it perfect (and I ended up doing a little bit of extra trimming), but I am so happy with the end result!  Now I don’t have to worry about anyone looking in that window. 🙂

Before and After: Our Front Door

Another one of my recent projects:  our front door.  The previous owners of our house for some reason thought it would be a good idea to paint the front door (and other exterior doors throughout the house) with a streaky red paint job.  It has bothered us tremendously ever since we moved in.  We have been debating how best to tackle the issue for a while now, and I finally decided to do something about the problem.

We were originally planning to paint the whole house green, with white and purple accents.  As crazy as this may sound, I like a purple door with a green house, but I do not like a purple door with a cream house.  I didn’t want to paint over the ugly red paint with the purple I was planning to use as a temporary fix, and instead tried out a sample of the green I was planning to use for a tree mural.  We ended up loving the color, and have since changed our exterior color plans.  We are going to go with white with green accents, which means the door color works out fine in the meantime, until we have the time to paint the whole house. 🙂

I also sculpted a floral cross for the door!
