Our Favorite Hybrid Diapering System: Gdiapers

When I was pregnant, I started looking into various cloth diaper brands. It saddens me to read how many regular diapers go into landfills each year, and my husband and I just could not stand the thought of being a contributor to that problem. I was a little overwhelmed by all of the different options out there and wasn’t sure how the whole concept would work for us. All of the babies that I used to babysit used only disposables, so cloth diapering was totally new to me. When my dad said that he would not do cloth diapers if my parents were babysitting E, I started looking into a hybrid diaper system. I discovered Gdiapers, and am so pleased with how they have been working for us.

We initially started with the Gdiapers newborn bundle, and I figured we would see how things went with that and one package of the cloth inserts before we invested too much more in the whole system. My initial plan was to start off using the biodegradable inserts and the cloth inserts once we returned home from the hospital and see what worked best for us. When we returned home from the hospital and I could not walk for a while without my crutches, we decided to just buy a couple of packages of regular disposable diapers like we had been given in the hospital for the time being, putting off the cloth diapers for later.  One night when we realized we were down to our last few disposable diapers, and all of the grocery stores were closed, I told my husband that we were going to start using the Gdiapers instead, despite everything else that was going on. I love the freedom that cloth diapers provide…no panicking when you are running low on diapers and the stores are closed. All you have to do is start a load of laundry and you are all set.

We quickly realized that we much preferred the Gdiapers over the regular disposable diapers anyway. The disposables we were using were leaking everywhere and just did not seem to hold enough. They were also starting to irritate his skin, despite being from a “natural” line of diapers. The newborn diaper shells are a little different than the ones shown below; the snap in liner is sewn into the diaper shell. Our baby quickly outgrew those and moved into the size small, shown below.

When I was researching Gdiapers online, it all seemed a little confusing to me at first. It seemed like there were a lot of things we would need to purchase to use the system. I decided to put together a step-by-step breakdown of how we use them, hopefully helping anyone else considering trying out cloth diapering.

Below: The various components we use. You don’t have to go with cloth and biodegradable inserts. You could use one or the other, but I like having both as an option for different times. We use the biodegradable inserts when we are out running errands since they absorb more, are less bulky in the diaper bag, and can be thrown away in a trash can. We also use the biodegradable inserts before bedtime at night since they hold more and we don’t wake up with the baby in a puddle of wetness. We use the cloth inserts the rest of the time, with a paper liner over it. The paper liner catches any poop so it is easily discarded, and makes washing the cloth inserts easier. To use the paper liner, you stuff in a cloth insert first, and then put in the paper liner over it.

With wet diapers, the snap-in liner can usually be reused for another round. For poopy diapers, the snap-in liner is usually best removed and replaced with a clean one. They come out very easily as seen below. Bonus…After you take out the paper liner or biodegradable insert, removing the snap-in liner like this keeps you from having to deal with touching any more of the mess.

The dirty, reusable parts of the diaper are tossed in the dirty bag. The paper liners and the biodegradable inserts are tossed in the diaper bin. When it is time to wash diapers, I just empty the bag into the washing machine, and toss in the bag, eliminating the need to touch the dirty diapers again. We also have a travel bag for dirty parts that is kept in the diaper bag, shown here.

One other important thing: the diaper shells must always be put on so that the “g” is facing the back. 🙂

I end up doing laundry about every 2-3 days, which is not so bad. This is the list of supplies that seems to work best for us: 6 cloth shells, 18 snap-in liners, 24 cloth inserts, a box of the paper liners, a dirty laundry bag, and a smaller travel wet bag.

Life Is Not Always Picture Perfect!

Okay, I am just going to say it. It is physically impossible for anyone to be able to perfectly keep up with everything all the time. In today’s Pinterest/blog filled society, we start to get the impression that in order to be a good mother and wife, that we need to have a perfectly spotlessly clean and organized home at all times. Some bloggers give the impression that every corner of their house is always immaculate and picture ready. I generally try to keep things pretty neat and clean, but sometimes that is just not always possible. Especially with a new baby around, I have quickly learned that this is definitely not always possible. Some days, other things just have to take higher priority than a spotless kitchen and all of the laundry neatly folded and put away. I realized that this is nothing to be ashamed of, and nothing to beat myself up about.

Our house was clean on Saturday. We had visitors who could attest to that. I gave myself a deadline to have all of our baby’s newborn photos that I took edited and processed. I wanted to make sure I had them all processed and blogged by the time I planned to mail out his birth announcements and baptism invitations (I included a link to our photography blog on his birth announcements). Since the deadline I set for myself was the end of the day on Monday, I treated that deadline just as I would treat any deadline that I give myself when working on photos for a client. Things that are urgent and MUST be done take top priority: feeding and taking care of the baby and the pets, and making sure we have clean diapers and towels.

I wasn’t able to quite finish everything up by Monday night, but came pretty close. On Tuesday morning, we went into the pediatrician for his two month appointment. Just like after his one month appointment, he cried pretty much nonstop the entire day after getting his vaccinations. The only thing that soothes him when he gets that upset is putting him in the Moby wrap for some skin-to-skin time all day.

Comforting our baby definitely takes priority over putting away laundry and scrubbing dishes. He is still pretty fussy today, and has a huge welt and rash all over one of his legs where the vaccine was injected. I will get to the house soon enough, but for the moment, soothing our little boy is my top priority. Once he is feeling a little better, I will tackle this to-do list:

1. Put away all the clean laundry.
2. Put away the clean dishes.
3. Clean the dirty dishes that are piling up from the past few days.
4. Sterilize all the breastmilk pumping parts and bottles.
5. Fold the sheets that were stuffed into the linen closet haphazardly.
6. Straighten up the living room and bedrooms since I have been skipping my daily pickup routine.
7. Get back on track with my weekly cleaning routine: dusting, sweeping, mopping, etc.
8. Wash a load or two of laundry.
9. Polish the copper bottoms of my pots and pans.
10. Get some kind of new organization system going for the paperwork explosion in the office.

I am very happy that I was able to get the birth announcements and baptism invitations put in the mail. 🙂 How bad do you let your house get when things get busy?

Laundry Room/Pantry Progress!

My husband started building these custom cabinets for the empty space in our laundry room to serve as pantry space quite a while back. Unfortunately, thanks to a really slow in-store delivery of the slide rails for the pull out drawers (and no phone call once his order had arrived!), the project got delayed for quite a while. The pantry cabinets are not finished yet, but functional is major progress! We no longer have food stacked up in corners throughout the living room, which is very exciting! Besides painting the pantry cabinets, he also plans to make doors for the pantry cabinets that will coordinate with the look of our kitchen cabinets. Eventually, when we get around to replacing our big bulky heater unit with something that can go in the attic, the box around the heater will also turn into more storage (which I am really excited about). Just like with our kitchen, there are a lot of finishing details that need to be finished (mostly trim work and outlet covers), but those details will come later once we are less stressed about everything being so disorganized and dysfunctional for so long.

I am very happy to have an organized laundry space again. We got this fold down table at Ikea to serve as a space for me to fold laundry. I love that the table folds down to save space when it is not in use.

All of my laundry supplies are organized on a shelf that was actually salvaged from elsewhere in the house! I have a basket for dirty rags, one for clothespins, one for miscellaneous laundry and shoe care supplies, and all of my laundry care supplies in a vintage fruit crate from our wedding. 🙂

Below: the slide out pantry drawers he built, some extra shelves above the almost-wasted area thanks to the strange location of the electrical panel, and my lost socks clothesline. I keep the socks that are missing their pair pinned to the clothesline until we confirm via a deep cleaning of the house that the mate is indeed missing. The missing socks usually turn up somewhere before then (I think one of the pets likes to use dirty socks as a toy).

You can see better below how we utilized the space in front of the electrical panel that otherwise would have gone to waste. It makes a perfect little nook for our vacuum, vacuum accessories, and the ironing board. Also, I have a perfect spot for my cleaning caddy, with all of the cleaning supplies I use on a regular basis.

Close up of one of the pull out drawers, with all of my baking supplies grouped together. I organized the pull out shelves with the heavier items since the rails will support up to 100 pounds. One drawer has all of the vegetables and fruit that I canned myself from our garden, another has regular canned goods, one has all of my baking supplies, and the last one has other cooking supplies like oils and vinegars.

In the pantry cabinet on the left, the space was smaller so he just installed shelves there. I found some plastic bins that fit these shelves well to organize the remaining food items.

In the plastic bins, I have the food separated into small baking supplies, cereal and breakfast supplies, dinner sides and pasta, snacks, and spices. We are both so happy that we finally have an organized pantry! It makes it so much easier to find everything we are looking for.
